For lab staff
The test catalogue, receiving orders, moving samples through statuses, entering results, critical alerts and report PDFs.
What you see when you log in
Your sidebar has Lab — Orders and Tests — plus Appointments, Queue and Patients. "Lab staff" covers two roles with slightly different access: Lab Admin runs the test catalogue and pricing as well as orders and results; Lab Technician runs samples and enters results but can't change what a test costs.
The test catalogue
Lab → Tests is the price list every order draws from — Lab Admin only. Each test has a name, code, sample type, department, price, GST rate, unit and reference range, and can be toggled active/inactive. A Lab Technician doesn't see the add/edit controls here.
Receiving orders
A lab order always belongs to a real patient — there's no anonymous or walk-in-only order. Lab → Orders → New order opens a patient picker (searched by name/phone) and a list of tests to add; if launched from an appointment, the patient is pre-filled for you.
Moving samples through statuses
Every order moves through the same fixed pipeline, one step at a time, from its detail page:
- 1Ordered — the order has been raised and is waiting on a sample.
- 2Collected — the sample has been taken from the patient.
- 3Processing — the sample is being run in the lab.
- 4Reported — results are entered and the report is final.
An order can be Cancelled from any stage before Reported. Once it's Reported it's the finished record — treat entering results as the last real action on that order.
Entering results & critical alerts
From the order's detail page, enter the value for each test item along with a flag (normal / abnormal / critical, per item) as you go — enter results as they're confirmed, not all at once at the end of the day. The Lab home page opens on Critical alerts, every result flagged critical, sitting above the day's order stats on purpose because a patient-safety flag should never require scrolling to find. A green check and "No critical results" means exactly that.
Treat a critical alert as a call-the-patient-or-doctor-now item, not a queue item — that's the whole reason it's flagged separately from a routine abnormal result.
Generating report PDFs
Once an order is Reported, Download Report on its detail page generates the final lab report as a PDF — patient details, tests, results, reference ranges and flags — ready to print or hand to the patient.
Only Lab Admin manages the test catalogue and its pricing. A Lab Technician can still order existing tests and enter results, just not create or reprice a test.
No — a patient is required. Search by name or phone in New order; if none matches, register the patient first from Patients.
Download Report only works once the order's status is Reported — move it there once every item has a result.
Open it and choose Cancel — available at any stage before Reported.
